PRAYER IN TIME OF DISTRESS Psalm 86 Verses 1-13

Incline your ear, O Lord; answer me, for I am afflicted and poor. Keep my life, for I am devoted to You; save your servant who trusts in You. You are my God; have pity on me, O Lord; for to you I call all the day. Gladden the soul of your servant, for to You, O Lord, I lift up my soul; For You, O Lord, are good and forgiving, abounding in kindness to all who call upon You. Hearken, O Lord, to my prayer and attend to the sound of my pleading. In the day of my distress I call upon You, for You will answer me. There is none like You among the gods, O Lord, and there are no works like yours, and glorify Your Name. For You are great, and You do wondrous deeds; You alone are God. Teach me, O Lord, your way that I may walk in your truth; direct my heart that it may fear your name.

I will give thanks to You, O Lord my God, with all my heart, and I will glorify your name forever. You have rescued me from the depths of the nether world.

PRAYERS TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee, blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

We fly to your patronage, O Virgin Mother of God. Despise not our prayers in our necessities, but who are alone pure and blessed, deliver us from all danger. O most glorious ever-Virgin Mary, Mother of Christ, Our God, receive our prayers and transmit them to your son and Our God, that He, for your sake, will enlighten and save our souls.

PRAYERS OF THE SICK

O Almighty God, Holy King, in chastisement you do not wish our death; You lift up those who have fallen; You raise those who have been cast down, and You ease the physical ills of mankind. I beseech You, My God, to have mercy on me. Heal my soul and body. Cleanse and banish every suffering, disease, illness, and weakness of my body and soul. Send down, O Lord, Your healing power from heaven; + strengthen my body, diminish my fever, and alleviate my suffering. Be a physician to me. Raise me from my sickbed, and restore to me my health. Grant that, through the prayers of your Church, I may please You by always doing your will. For only you can be all-merciful and save me, O God, and to You I give glory, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and ever and forever. Amen.

FOR THOSE SUFFERING FEVER

O Lord Jesus Christ my God, You are a river flowing in a desert, and the shadow of a huge rock in a sun-scorched land. At the prayerful request of your apostle, Peter; You subdued the fever of his mother-in-law. I beseech you, hear my supplication for the remission of my sins. In your compassion, + ease my pain, subdue the fever of my ailment. May I find the cure I seek from You, and, by Your mercy, may I rise from my sick-bed. For You are a merciful God, and You love mankind, and I give glory to You, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and ever, and forever. Amen.

AFTER AN ACCIDENT OR INJURY.

O Lord my God and Savior, You rule over all things; You are my physician and comfort in sickness; You deliver me from pain. You stretched forth your hand to save your apostle Peter as he was sinking in water. Grant now your merciful aid to me and heal my injuries. And as I trustingly call on You, + restore me to health in your loving kindness. O long-suffering Lord, show me your compassion and mercy that I may glorify your divine power and bless your holy Name, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and ever and forever. Amen.

BEFORE AN OPERATION

O Lord Jesus Christ our God, You patiently endured the scourging and wounding of your sacred body, that You may save the souls and bodies of your people. Look now graciously on my suffering body, + and give me the strength to bear patiently whatever awaits me. Bless the people and all the means which will be used to restore me to health, and grant that I may accept my bodily sufferings as a means of reparation for the salvation of my soul. For You, O Christ, my God and Savior, are merciful, and I give glory to You, together with your eternal Father and with your all-holy and life-giving spirit, now and ever, and forever. Amen.

FOR THOSE WHOSE ILLNESS GROWS WORSE

O Lord, Jesus Christ Our Savior, for our sake You have been born, have hungered and thirsted, have suffered, and have laid down your life. As I share in Your sufferings, allow me to share also in Your graces. May your Precious Blood wash away the stains of my sins; may Your righteousness cleanse my iniquities. + Consider rather my faith in You than my deeds when I appear before You, My Judge. As my health fails, increase in me your bountiful graces, May I stand firm in my faith; my hope in You never fail; may my love of You never grow cold; may the fear of death never cause me to abandon trust in You, but persevering unto the end, may I say to you: "Into Your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit." And may I so enter into your everlasting Kingdom, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and ever and forever. Amen.

[It is customary for those receiving this anointing to have received the Sacrament of Penance and absolution beforehand. It is also customary, where possible, to attend the Divine Liturgy, after the Dismissal of which this anointing will be performed. If it is not possible to perform the anointing in the parish church after a Liturgy, the priest will visit the home and administer the Sacraments of Penance and Holy Communion at the same time. However, this ritual is NOT the anointing we Catholics refer commonly to as "The Last Rites," or "Extreme Unction." That is a quite different service altogether. Be careful, please, not to confuse the two.]

________________

THE PRIEST'S PRAYER OF ANOINTING

Holy Father, Physician of souls and bodies, You sent Your Only-Begotten Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ, to heal every infirmity, and to deliver us from death. By this anointing, heal your servant (name) of the spiritual and bodily ills which afflict him (her), and restore him (her) by the grace of Your Christ, through the prayers of our most Holy Lady, the Mother of God and ever-virgin Mary, and through the prayers of all your Saints.

For You, Our God, are the fountain of healing; and to You we give glory, together with Your Only-Begotten Son and your Consubstantial Spirit, now and ever, and forever. Amen.

[As is too often the case we, like the ten lepers, forget often to return to the Lord to offer thanks for our healing. But one is provided here for those who, like the one Samaritan Leper, returned to offer thanks to His God for His Healing, and went home with his sins forgiven him.]

THANKSGIVING FOR RECOVERY

O Lord, Jesus Christ, You are the life and strength of all who trust in You. Your mercies are without number, and the treasury of Your goodness is inexhaustible. I thank You for the blessings You bestowed upon me, and I beseech You to continue revealing Your goodness to me. As it pleased You to restore my body to health, so now endow my soul with all heavenly graces and perseverance in good works. + Prepare me by Your blessing, in this life, for the enjoyment of eternal happiness in the life to come. For to You is due all glory, thanksgiving and adoration, together with Your eternal Father, and Your all-holy, gracious, and life-giving Spirit, now and ever and forever. Amen.

THANKSGIVING AFTER SICKNESS Psalm 41

Happy is he who has regard for the lowly and the poor; In the day of misfortune the Lord will deliver him. The Lord will keep and preserve him; He will make him happy on the earth, and will not give him over to the will of his enemies.

The Lord will help him on his sickbed, He will take away all his ailment when he is ill. Once I said, "O Lord, have pity on me; heal me, though I have sinned against You. My enemies say the worst of me: 'When will he die and his name perish?'"

When one comes to see me, he speaks without sincerity; his heart stores up malice;

All my foes whisper together against me; Against me they imagine the worst: 'A malignant disease fills his frame;' and 'Now that he lies ill, he will not rise again.'

Even my friend who had my trust, and partook of my bread, has raised his heel against me. But You, O Lord, have pity on me, and raise me up, That I may repay them. That You love me I know by this, that my enemy does not triumph over me, But because of my integrity You sustain me and let me stand before you forever. Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, from all eternity and forever. AMEN!

And the customary closing, and final blessing:

GLORY BE TO THEE, O CHRIST, OUR GOD, GLORY BE TO THEE. Rx: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy + Spirit, now and ever, and forever. Amen.

May Christ our True God, [During Easter time: Who has risen from the dead, conquering death by death, and to all those in the graves granting life] have mercy on us and save us through His Graciousness and His Love for mankind.

Rx: AMEN.
